Video delivery and RF basics

Goal

Understand the interview vocabulary. Distinguish theoretical knowledge from equipment you have used.

Video delivery

A simple delivery path is source, encoder, delivery network, and player. Encoding compresses audio and video; delivery transports the resulting data.

Bitrate describes data per second. Resolution describes image dimensions. They are related but not interchangeable.

HLS uses playlists and media segments delivered over HTTP. Players can select different available quality levels as conditions change.

Unicast sends traffic to an individual destination. IP multicast distributes traffic to a receiver group. IGMP manages IPv4 multicast membership on a local network.

Not all video uses multicast. Delivery protocols and network design depend on the product.

Packet loss, delay variation, insufficient throughput, and source or decoder faults can affect playback. Buffering is a symptom with several possible causes.

RF vocabulary

Radio frequency systems carry information using electromagnetic signals. Cable systems can carry RF signals over coaxial cable.

Frequency is measured in hertz. Signal power can be expressed in dBm. SNR compares signal power with noise power, commonly in dB.

A spectrum analyzer shows signal power across frequency. Do not confuse it with a packet capture tool, which examines network traffic.

Do not claim hands-on RF measurement experience from reading this chapter. Equipment operation and acceptable measurements depend on the actual system.

Discussion exercise

A customer reports that one channel freezes while others work.

List questions that establish scope: one receiver or many, one channel or all, start time, recent changes, and available alarms.

Explain why this evidence helps separate a shared delivery problem from a receiver-specific problem. Do not select a cause without measurements.

Completion check

Explain the delivery path, bitrate, packet loss, unicast versus multicast, and the purpose of a spectrum analyzer.
